VERrUCAE/WARTS

What are Verrucas?

Verrucas (Warts) are small, rough, raised lumps on the skin. These lumps are caused due to a reaction to the Human Papillomavirus (HPV).

Verrucas are spread via skin contact, commonly in social areas such as showers, swimming pools and gyms, and can be exacerbated via exercise.

Verrucas are warts that are primarily on the soles of your feet. They may have tiny black dots in the centre – these are blood clots that have formed in tiny blood vessels. They may be painful, especially when you put weight on them. Sometimes, if you have clusters of verrucas, they can fuse together.

How can you prevent spreading and/or developing Verrucas?

If you find any of the following difficult to do, please consult a podiatrist or chiropodist:

-Don’t scratch or pick your wart/ verruca as it’s more likely to spread.

-If you have warts on your fingers, don’t bite your nails or suck your fingers.

-Cover your wart/ verruca with a waterproof plaster when you go swimming.

-Change your socks every day.

-Wear flip-flops in communal showers and changing rooms.

-Don’t share your towels, shoes or socks.

-Keep your feet clean and dry.

What can you do?

Verrucas are often treated using either over-the-counter or prescription medication (creams and ointments). However, the effectiveness of these medications can vary per case and may not be suitable for everyone.

What can we do?

Our podiatrists offer a specific form of treatment for Verrucas called Verrutop,
