Fenestration / lacuna for fungal nails

This method is where the clinician will drill small micro-holes into the fungal nail itself. The number of holes created will depend on the severity of the infection present. Creating these micro-holes will then allow for the antifungal treatment (Lamasil 0.1% spray-Terbinafine) to be applied to the nail, allowing it to seep into the nail, reach the nail bed and increase the chance of successful treatment of fungal nail.

Lamsil is a skin antifungal spray, however, there has been studies which have proven the use of it on nails is just as effective, as the holes created by the Lacuna method allow the spray to reach the skin/nail bed and treat that area. As the antifungal treatment is able to penetrate down to the nail bed through this method (instead of just sitting on the nail and being a topical treatment), the treatment has a proven higher chance of being effective.

You will be sent home with Lamsil 0.1% spray and are required to use the treatment daily at home until the infection is resolved. Follow up reviews will be between 6-8 weeks apart and if required, re-drill can be carried out if the clinician feels that more micro-holes need to be created.
